BU: Buried at the back of the old Woodhouse Methodist United Cemetery
in Norfolk County, 3 miles south of Simcoe. In the Decoe family
plot. He was 55 years, 3 months and 21 days. He had an adopted
daughter, Alice Maude. RLW has a statement of the disposition
of his estate. $10920.35 which was divided between the children
of James Whitside, Nov 30, 1905 and Alice Maude, his adopted daughter.
This is strange why not leave it all to his daughter. It amounted
to equal shares of $1583.00 to 5 of James children and to Alice
Maude. She also got all of the real estate.
Don Whiteside has abstract of his will showing he had an adopted
daughter, Alice Maude Whitside and final disposition of $10,920.35
DEED: RLW has deed of Land transferring 40 acres in Woodhouse
Gore dated 28 Oct. 1872 from George Levi Scott & wife Rachel
Scott to William Lawrence for $2600.00
DEED: RLW has Deed of Land which transfers 40 acres of land in
Woodhouse Gore dated Jan. 18, 1889 from William Lawrence and wife
Ann Lawrence to David Whitside of the Tsp of Charlotteville, Farmer
for $3000.00.
BU: Woodhouse United/Methodist Church Cemetery.
WILL: RLW has a Executor Deed between William Dawson, executor,
Alice Maud Cook of Varna and Tsp of Charlotteville. He grants
all his property to his dau. subject to the live estate of his
wife Martha Jane Whitside. States David departed this life 21
Dec. 1891 and his wife Martha on 4 Jan. 1906. David's land was
in Woodhouse, 40 acres, composed of part of Lot #3 in the gore
of Woodhouse. It is bounded & butted as follows, beginning
at the north west angle of the said lot thence south thirty degrees
east twenty five chains thence north seventy eight degrees thirty
minutes east sixteen chains and sixty links thence north thirty
degrees west, twenty five chains thence south seventy eight degrees
thirty minutes west, sixteen chains and sixty links to the place
of beginning. This land was still owned by Alice in 1925 as she
paid insurance of $38.00 for $3000. of value. Contained a brick
dwelling @ frame addition, barn, stock, implements, etc.
LETTER: from W. H. Whitside of Box 117 Delhi with reference to
the estate of Uncle David Whitside to Mrs. Alice Cook dated March
15, 1906 letter to Varna, Ont.

FAM:from a letter addressed to her Dec 15, 1924, from her Brother,
Arthur A. Laley, it would appear that her name before adoption
was Laley! Arthur wrote from Kinley, Saskatchewan. There is another
letter from St. Thomas dated Oct 4 ? from a John Laley writing
to Dere sister and brother. Another dated Jan 16 ? from Blind
River signed by John, loving brother. A letter dated Dec.3rd ?
from John to his wife girls and Arty. Refers to her as Rose. Says
he is working for a sawmill making $30.00 a month. Sent her $10.00
another letter dated Sept 29, 1906 puts John working for the Michigan
Central in St. Thomas. A letter dated March 21/1906 from her brother
W. Laley of Echo Bay, Ont advises that their brother John is now
working in the area. Gives congratulation on their marriage and
condolences on the death of Aunt Martha, (Martha J. Decoe) Whitside.
251 This indicates the Laly's were related to Martha Decoe.
Note: She still owned her father's original farm and house in
Woodhouse Gore in 1931 as she was paying Insurance on it.

contained papers kept by Hattie May Cook until her death. It appears
Harry Cook owned a hotel in Varna Ont. Note telegram re Martha
Whitside's death addressed to Alice Maude to the hotel at Varna.

on 25th April, 1924. Occupation was farmer. States he had 4 brothers,
3 of whom were dead at this date , one living and 1 sister living.
He was 5' 7" and weighed 140 lbs.
OCC: I have a card showing Harry A . Cook as proprietor of King
Edward Hotel in Varna, Ontario.
OCC: He was granted a Tobacco Cultivator's License for the year
1920/21 on 1 April, 1920.
