WHITSIDE

Family History & Genealogy

DNA

At the end of 2003, with the encouragement of the Whiteside Family Association, under the Whiteside Project, I had my DNA analyzed by Family Tree DNA, a company in Houston, Texas. This company pioneered the use of DNA in the field of genealogy, providing a new way to break through the barriers in Family History. The results of my test showed that with 25 markers we matched a core group of Whiteside/Whitsitt genealogist who have already had their DNA analyzed. This pretty well assures us that our small family of Whitside's in North America are directly related to the much larger family group of Whitesides. So far there are 18 Whiteside/Whitsitt males to whom we have limked.

This family of Whitesides most likely had occurred in Ireland after migration from England. One of the 5 Whiteside to which we are closely related is from west Sligo and was believed to be a English migrant. As a matter of interest there are 6 small villages and or areas named Whiteside in the south west Scotland. Of course there are many Whiteside/Whitside/Whitsitt families in the northern England area of Lancashire.

WE WERE ORIGINALLY WHITESIDES! OR, MAYBE THEY WERE WHITSIDES AND THEY CHANGED THEIR NAME!

If you would like to learn more about Family Tree DNA, check out their website at <http://www.familytreedna.com>. It's quite an education in the advancement of genealogy. The challenge now is to link our oldest proven ancestor, William H. Whitside, (1809-1856) to the Whiteside family or Whitsides in the United Kingdom.

I am the Webmaster for the Whiteside Family Association. We are now online at <whitesideancestry.org>. Have a look.

We are represented as Family #701. At the present time it appears that the Whitside/Whitesides came from the old area of Strathclyde which stretched from Southern Scotland down into England to the Lancashire district. For further information on this, look at Ernie Whiteside's website at <http://home.comcast.net/~ewhiteside/clan/index.html>. Click here and be prepared for a grand voyage of discovery of the Whiteside/Whitside clan.

I have included the Cameron and Heath families as connected family relatives to the Canadian side of our family.

For a contact, you may write to Robert Whitside at #23, 175 Victoria St., Simcoe, Ont., N3Y 5L8 or email me I am always happy to exchange data. For email just type .I am now writing a book on the Whitside Family History and Genealogy which will include the biography of Fl/Lt William James Whitside, General Samuel Marmaduke Whitside and the history of the families Canadian company business.

SOVEREEN/SOVEREIGN: For many years I have been compiling all data and genealogy for these families. My Gr Grandfather was a SOVEREEN and this was the original name of our family business. Most of the data is in the archives of The Eva Brook Donly Museum in Simcoe, Ontario and may be obtained through them or by contacting me.
